A Chattanooga native, Bachman (1878-1937) had been elected Judge of the Sixth Judicial Circuit of Tennessee in 1912 (in 1918 he became a justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court and served as the state's U.S. Senator from 1924-36). At the time of this FSC he had recently built a summer home on Walden's Ridge which eventually became his primary residence. The house, still standing, is on Anderson Pike not far from where Miles herself had grown up. Bachman was extremely popular with his mountain neighbors; a primary school on Walden's Ridge is named for him.
