This quotation is adapted from "The Wantin' O' the Vote," a ballad which Miles herself had published in the News on Saturday, June 13, 1914. The comment that the Nighthawk "cannot sing" may result from Miles' modesty in thus promoting herself. For more on the hunger strikers and the forced feeding of British suffrage-leader Emmeline Pankhurst, cf. note to the FSC of April 3, 1914.
