"Central" refers to the central operator(s) of Chattanooga's local telephone system. In the stifling summer heat, operators were forced to stand for long hours to work the switchboard. Miles had recently addressed this problem in an unsigned editorial titled "A Word to Working Girls": "One reads of heat prostation in the streets of large cities, but no account is taken of the many toilers who fall at their work--the telephone girls, the saleswomen, the factory and mill operatives" (4/11/14: 6).
