Chattanooga hosted a national convention of the Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine from Monday, May 11, to Thursday, May 14, 1914. Activities included "motordrome races," sight-seeing and a grand ball. The city had gone to great lengths to insure the event's success. A News' article titled "Anxiously Awaiting Shriners" (5/9/14:9) reports that the city planned to post hundreds of its citizens throughout the city in order to give directions to the visitors and that the Police Chief had issued an order allowing Shriners "to use the streets for any purpose they wish" (9).
